Rescue crews tow stuck 4×4 from mud on Brean Beach

A family of five from Bristol have been rescued after their 4×4 became stuck in mud on a Somerset beach.

A rescue hovercraft and two teams of coastguards were called to Brean Beach just after 1600 GMT on Saturday.

The Hyundai Tucson, which was half a mile from the shore, was towed to safety by the Burnham Area Rescue Boat’s (Barb) tractor.

The parents and three children – aged seven, four and two – were unhurt, a Barb spokesman said.

Mike Freye, the owner of the vehicle, said: “I’ve driven here in the past and know the dangers, but was amazed at how quickly the car just sank into the mud.”

‘Dangerous stretch’

He thanked the emergency services and said he would make a donation to Barb.

Mark Newman, chairman of Barb, said the time of high and low tide at the beach, between Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea, varied from day to day.

“The tide was going out at the time so fortunately, while it was a serious position they were in, the tide was within an hour of two of reaching them,” he said.

“They were about a mile from where a five-year-old girl died on mudflats several years ago.

“It’s a dangerous stretch of coastline when the warning signs are not heeded.”

A mosquito found near North Shore is the first in California to test positive for the West Nile virus this year, the Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District announced Friday.

The mosquito sample was taken from a trap located near the Salton Sea, district officials said. District staff will intensify mosquito surveillance and larviciding in this area to reduce the number of adult mosquitoes, officials said.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, four out of five people infected with West Nile will show no symptoms at all.

But about 20 percent of those infected will become sick, potentially developing symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back.

Symptoms can last for as short as a few days, though even healthy people have become sick for several weeks.

About one out of every 150 people infected becomes severely ill, with symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis, according to the CDC.

These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent.

Individuals can reduce their risk of mosquito-borne diseases by taking these precautions:

• Avoid outdoor activity at dusk and dawn.
• When outdoors, wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and other protective clothing.
• Apply insect repellent according to label instructions.
• Make sure that doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
• Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property that can support mosquito breeding.

Stuck in Muck

ORLANDO, Florida – A missing runner was rescued from a Florida swamp after spending four days stuck in the muck with only the waist-deep swamp water to drink. His first request: some good, old-fashioned drinking water.

Eddie Meadows, 62, had left for a run over his lunch hour Thursday but never returned to his office at a nearby University of Central Florida research park, authorities said.

He was spotted among the brush and trees Monday morning as 50 friends and colleagues searched for him.

Meadows, who was parched and covered with bug bites, had consumed swamp water to stay hydrated during the four-day ordeal, said university police Sgt. Woody Furnas. Furnas said the area has thick silt and muck that can act like glue.

“He had great spirits, and he was very adamant about getting a drink of water,” Furnas said. “He said he slept a lot and stayed down in the water.”

A hospital spokeswoman would not discuss Meadows’ condition but the Orlando Sentinel reported that Meadows underwent extra blood tests for possible infections from the swamp water.

Furnas described Meadows, a contract employee with the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation, as “a strong guy. He’s in good shape. He’s a marathoner.”

Ron Eaglin, a UCF computer-engineering professor, found Eaglin in the heavy brush, and then called 911 to report the location.

“I really thought we were looking for a body,” Eaglin told the Orlando Sentinel. “I was very happy when it wasn’t a body we found.”
